One year on, I came back to the image that started it all and stripped it to black and white—because the color softened what the fire actually did. I wanted this one reimagined to show the fire that swallowed them, and the survival that outlasted it.
In the aftermath of Jasper’s 2024 wildfires, Grizzly 222 and her cub rest on a charred log as the first drops of rain begin to fall. With the color gone, the blackened forest closes in—ash, bone, and rain—and what’s left is the two of them, still standing. The depth of loss, and the wild resilience that endures.
The black-and-white companion to the original color work, FIELD WORK 001 - In the Wake of Fire.
